China growth reaches 13-year high

The Chinese economy has expanded by 11.4% over the past year, reaching its fastest growth rate in 13 years, officials have announced.

Increased exports and a boom in the construction industry helped the rapid expansion during 2007.

But officials warned that overheating remained a danger, despite a slight slow-down in the fourth quarter.

Inflation is also a serious concern, with many Chinese people hit by recent dramatic increases in food prices.

'Still developing'

Announcing the figures, National Statistics Bureau chief Xie Fuzhan said Beijing was paying "close attention" to the US credit crisis.

He said Beijing would respond by making "timely and proper adjustments" in exchange and interest rate policy, but gave no details.

Speculation has been mounting among analysts over whether China has overtaken Germany to become the world's third-largest economy.

But Mr Xie played down the comparison, saying: "It's not really important to know whether China is the fourth-largest or the third-largest.

"Even if the total surpasses Germany, China is still a developing country - in particular, the per capita GDP of China is really low."

Price controls

The BBC's Quentin Sommerville, in Shanghai, says economic growth is not a problem in China, but keeping the ever-expanding economy under control is proving tricky.

It took six interest rate rises by the government last year to slow the expansion. The last quarter of 2007 saw growth ease to 11.2%.

But while other governments around the world are cutting interest rates, China will likely have to raise them again if it is to keep its economy growing at a sustainable level, our correspondent says.

Another headache for Beijing last year was inflation.

Despite its growing wealth, China still has a large number of poor people struggling with dramatic increases in the price of daily essentials such as pork, which jumped by 50%.

Inflation hit an 11-year year high in November. Thursday's figures show that it fell back in December, although at 6.5% it remains a worry.

The government has introduced a range of price controls recently aimed at bring the cost of ordinary goods, particularly food, under control.

Dramatic price rises have led to social unrest in the past and Beijing cannot afford for its millions of poor to go hungry.

Brazil Amazon deforestation soars

The Brazilian government has announced a huge rise in the rate of Amazon deforestation, months after celebrating its success in achieving a reduction.

In the last five months of 2007, 3,235 sq km (1,250 sq miles) were lost.

Gilberto Camara, of INPE, an institute that provides satellite imaging of the area, said the rate of loss was unprecedented for the time of year.

Officials say rising commodity prices are encouraging farmers to clear more land to plant crops such as soya.The monthly rate of deforestation saw a big rise from 243 sq km (94 sq miles) in August to 948 sq km (366 sq miles) in December.

"We've never before detected such a high deforestation rate at this time of year," Mr Camara said.

His concern, outlined during a news conference in Brasilia on Wednesday, was echoed by Environment Minister Marina Silva.

Expensive soya

Ms Silva said rising prices of raw materials and commodities could be spurring the rate of forest clearing, as more and more farmers saw the Amazon as a source of cheap land.

"The economic reality of these states indicate that these activities impact, without a shadow of a doubt, on the forest," she said.

The state of Mato Grosso was the worst affected, contributing more than half the total area of forest stripped, or 1,786 sq km (700 sq miles).

The states of Para and Rondonia were also badly affected, accounting for 17.8% and 16% of the total cleared respectively.

The situation may also be worse than reported, with the environment ministry saying the preliminary assessment of the amount of forest cleared could double as more detailed satellite images are analysed.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is due to attend an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss new measures to tackle deforestation in the Amazon.

The latest figures will be an embarrassment for the Brazilian president, correspondents say.

Last year, President Lula said his government's efforts to control illegal logging and introduce better certification of land ownership had helped reduce forest clearance significantly.

Even as he celebrated the success, though, environmentalists were warning that the rate was rising again.

What is Parkour ?

Parkour, known as Le Parkour or PK for short is not something that can be easily described or explained. Actions speak louder than words and the art of movement does exactly that.

Parkour is about moving, moving in a way in which you don’t let anything stop you - moving through your environment and overcoming any obstacles that come in your path.

Originally, David Belle and his childhood friend Sebastian Foucan created Parkour from an idea that was put into David Belle's head from his father. Raymond Belle (David’s father) adapted the idea.

David always looked up to his father and his grandfather for being heroes the pair where sapeurs-pompiers (military fire service). David would always listen to tales form his grandfather and father and feel proud and very inspired and realised he had to find a similarly path.

David joined the fire service but felt to restricted by the regulations and wanted to be free. His only real love was obstacle courses.

He then left for India and achieved a black belt in Chinese Kung Fu. He also achieved a certificate of honour for his gymnastic agility, this is where Parkour was born.

Aliens attract UK moviegoers

Horror sequel Alien vs Predator: Requiem has scared its way to the top of the UK box office charts after a fright-filled opening weekend.

With £1.97 million in box office receipts, the violent thriller tells of a small Colorado town plagued by the arrival of the battling extraterrestrial life-forms, as well as a terrifying hybrid being.

Despite pulling in eight Oscar nominations, No Country for Old Men was not as appetising to audiences in the UK and Ireland as a fight between alien species, with the Coen brothers' brooding drama finishing in second spot after its first three days on release.

An adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel, No Country for Old Men's £1.26 million in box office takings was followed today by nominations in the best picture, best director, best adapted screenplay and best supporting actor categories for the 80th annual Academy awards.

The film was also nominated for its cinematography, sound editing, sound mixing and film editing.

The Hillary Swank-starring romance PS I Love You dropped one place to third in the UK charts while Will Smith actioner I Am Legend finally fell to fourth after three weeks in the number one spot.

Political satire Charlie Wilson's War rounded out this week's top five films.

37 killed in Pakistan fighting

Heavy fighting has left 37 pro-Taliban militants killed, according to a statement from the Pakistani military.

An attack on the Ladha observation post in South Waziristan on the Afghan border was repulsed by security forces, with five troops killed and seven injured, Major General Athar Abbas confirmed.

"Deaths of 37 miscreants during the attack on observation post in the morning have been confirmed through interception of miscreants' communication network and own sources in the area," a military statement was quoted by the Xinhua news agency as saying.

A Taliban spokesman denied the military reports, saying ten troops had been killed and 13 captured.

The clash occurred at 01:00 local time (20:00 GMT) on Monday night, as skirmishes between the military and pro-Taliban militants intensify in the wake of the assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Baitullah Mehsud, a fugitive tribal leader based in South Waziristan, has been linked with Ms Bhutto's death by Islamabad and Washington, with government forces pursuing militants loyal to Mehsud and al-Qaida.

Maulvi Omar, a spokesman for Mehsud, told the Reuters news agency that the militants would increase attacks unless the government ceased its operations in Waziristan.

"We will target sensitive government installations in Islamabad and other areas if the government continues this," he said.

Two troops were killed and seven injured in an attack on an army camp in neighbouring North Waziristan, security forces have also confirmed.

The attacks came on the even of talks between General Ashfaq Kayani, the chief of the Pakistani army, and Admiral William Fallon, head of the US military's Central Command for the Middle East. End of story

Work stress 'changes your body'

A stressful job has a direct biological impact on the body, raising the risk of heart disease, research has indicated.

The study reported in the European Heart Journal focused on more than 10,000 British civil servants.

Those under 50 who said their work was stressful were nearly 70% more likely to develop heart disease than the stress-free.

The stressed had less time to exercise and eat well - but they also showed signs of important biochemical changes.

The studies of Whitehall employees - from mandarins to messengers - started in the 1960s, but this particular cohort has been followed since 1985.

As well as documenting how workers felt about their job, researchers monitored heart rate variability, blood pressure, and the amount of the stress hormone cortisol in the blood.

They also took notes about diet, exercise, smoking and drinking.

Then they found out how many people had developed coronary heart disease (CHD) or suffered a heart attack and how many had died of it.

Heath Ledger is found dead in US

Hollywood actor Heath Ledger has been found dead at his home in Manhattan.

"He was found unconscious at the apartment and pronounced dead," the New York Police Department said, adding that pills were found near the body.

Police are reportedly investigating if the Australian actor - nominated for an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain - died of an overdose of prescription pills.

Father Kim Ledger said that the death of his 28-year-old "dearly loved son" had been "tragic" and "accidental".

Police to join in pay row rally

About 15,000 police officers are expected to gather in London for a mass march and rally in a protest over pay.

Officers are angry that a 2.5% pay rise has been backdated to only 1 December for officers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Police say it is effectively a 1.9% increase, unlike Scotland where the rise has been backdated to 1 September.

The Home Office said it had a responsibility to make sure pay rises were in line with government policy.

In Scotland, the Scottish government agreed to backdate the increase fully to 1 September, as recommended by the independent Police Arbitration Tribunal.
